ROCKET INVITATIONAL DAY 1 RECAP: The Duquesne volleyball team lost two hard-played matches on Friday, falling to #17 Minnesota and IPFW.
Against Minnesota, Lacey Levers led the Dukes with nine kills, Patti Abshire had 12 digs and Mary Henry 27 assists. In the 1st set, the Dukes took an early 7-6 lead, but the Golden Gophers came back with four straight points and eight of the next 10 to take a 14-9 advantage. Minnesota won the set 25-17. Duquesne went up 4-2 early in the 2nd set, but UM went on an 11-1 run to take a 13-5 lead en route to another 25-17 win. The 3rd set had 12 ties and three lead changes. With the set tied at 17-17, the Gophers won the next five points and took the set 25-19.
In the final match of the day, the Dukes fell to IPFW. Arielle Love and Molly Davet led Duquesne with eight kills. Davet had a team-high 12 digs and Henry had 27 assists.
With the 1st set tied at 8-8, IPFW went on an 8-3 run to take a 16-11 lead. Duquesne would cut the Mastodons lead to three points at 19-16, but could not get any closer, falling 25-19. The Dukes led 11-10 in the 2nd set, but after four straight IPFW points they stayed ahead the remainder of the set, taking a 25-21 win. With the Dukes up 24-21 in the 3rd set, IPFW fought off two set points while ending the match with five straight points to take the set 26-24 and the match 3-0.
