QUICK RECAP: The Duquesne volleyball team fell in a hard-fought five set match to Rhode Island on Saturday night 3-2. Arielle Love tied her career-high with 22 kills (vs. Cincinnati on 09/20/13). Molly Davet had 10 kills and Madelynn Burnham 11 off the bench for the Dukes. Mary Henry recorded a double-double of 47 assists and 10 digs. Patti Abshire added 13 digs. Rhode Island had four played in double-digit kills led by Cate Seman and Franki Darnold with 16 each. Callan Kinnan had a match-best 58 assists.
With the 1st set tied at 7-7, a Duquesne service error followed by an attack error gave the Rams the lead the rest of the way. Rhody closed out the set at 25-18 on a block by Seman and Marie Gilchrist to go up 1-0.
With the Dukes down 3-1 early in the 2nd set, Love would throw down five kills and a block coupled with a Davet block to give Duquesne an 8-3 lead. A Davet kill would make the score 18-8. The Rams would not get within 10 points of tying the set as the Dukes tied the match at 1-1, winning 25-13.
The 3rd set had 15 ties and with the score deadlocked at 23-23, a Love kill gave Duquesne its first set point. However, a kill by Darnold tied the set at 24-24. Love would record another kill forcing another set point, but Seman came back with a kill for URI to tie the set at 25-25. Duquesne had a third set point off a Love kill, but Rhody fought back with a kill from Layne Self that made the score 26-26. Darnold followed with an ace, giving Rhode Island the lead, but Burnham countered with a kill to tie the set at 27-27. Self's kill put the Rams up against at 28-27, but a kill by Lacey Levers and back-to-back kills by Liis Kullerkann gave Duquesne set 30-28 and put them up 2-1 in the match.
The 4th set was also close, with 13 ties. URI held off a match point at 24-23 on a Seman kill. The Rams would follow with a block by Seman and Self and a Darnold kill. A Dukes ball handling error gave Rhode Island the set at 26-24 and tied the match at 2-2.
After Levers put the Dukes up 1-0 in the 5th set, the Rams would get a Steffan kill followed by back-to-back kills from Seman to take the lead they would not rescind. A block by Seman and Gilchrist ended the set at 15-11 and the match 3-2 in favor of Rhode Island.
