QUICK RECAP: The Duquesne women's soccer opened Atlantic 10 Conference play with a 2-2 draw against Richmond on Friday night.
The 1st half did not have many scoring opportunities until the 33rd minute when Richmond's Shannon Aha's shot from 20 yards out hit off the crossbar and ricocheted straight down. The rebound came out to UR's Shannon Colligan, whose attempt went wide left. The Spiders had another scoring opportunity when Dukes keeper Devon Tabata made a diving save off a header from Ashley Williams.
The Dukes got on the board first when Maddie Layman was able to take Linnea Faccenda's corner kick past Richmond keeper Katie Brennan in the 50th minute. The Dukes extended the lead when Layman was successfully converted a penalty shot to make the score 2-0. However, Richmond was able to tie the match after Melissa Carrigan found the back of the net twice in 7:08. She received the ball in box off of passes from Aha and Colligan. Colligan set Carrigan up for the tying goal in the 78th minute off an indirect kick from the right side. The Dukes had two shots in the final minute, but Kahli Hale went wide and Amy Vinopal went high.
The overtime periods did not see many scoring opportunities. The Dukes were held without any shots and the Spiders four attempts were not on goal.
UP NEXT: The Dukes open Atlantic 10 play on Oct. 5th when they host Richmond at Rooney Field.
