QUICK RECAP: The Duquesne volleyball extended its winning streak to six matches after a 3-2 victory over 2nd place George Washington on Sunday afternoon at the Palumbo Center. With the win, the Dukes improve to 6-3 in Atlantic 10 Conference play and move into a tie for 2nd place with GW, Saint Louis VCU and Rhode Island.
Arielle Love led Duquesne with 17 kills. Liis Kullerkann (14), Lacey Levers (13), Molly Davet (12) and Madelynn Burnham (11) all recorded double-digit kills for the Dukes. Mary Henry had career-highs 60 assists and 22 digs. Patti Abshire's 15 digs gave her 1,681 for her career and moved her into second place all-time. Sammy Kline added 13 digs.
GW's Chidima Osuchukwu had a match-high 21 kills and Kelsey Newman added 20. Jordan Trimmer recorded 64 assists.
With Duquesne trailing 15-13 in the 1st set, a kill from Molly Davet started a 5-0 run to put the Dukes up 18-15. George Washington would cut the lead to one point after a DUQ attack error made the score 20-19. The teams split the next eight points before a Burnham kill ended the set with Duquesne winning 25-23.
The 2nd set was tight the entire way with the largest lead coming after back-to-back GW hitting errors made the score 15-11 in favor of Duquesne. The Colonials won nine of the next 15 points to make the deficit one point at 21-20. Kills from Burnham, Davet and Levers made it set point at 24-21. GW held off one set point before an attack error gave the Dukes the 25-22 set win and a 2-0 match lead.
The Colonials would win the first two points of the 3rd set before the Dukes would come back by winning the next four. Duquesne would either lead or the set would be tied until GW would score three straight points to go ahead 17-15. The Dukes could not regain the lead and fell 25-22.
Down 5-2 in the 4th set, the Dukes came back with four straight points to take a 6-5 lead. This was part of a 10-3 run that put Duquesne up 12-8 forcing a Colonials timeout. The Dukes would hold onto the lead until a George Washington block made the score 20-20. The teams would exchange the next four points, making the sixth tie of the set. GW took a 23-22 lead after a Duquesne service error, but would respond with a Kullerkann kill to tie the set at 23-23. The Colonials forced set point on the next play, but a Davet kill tied the score at 24-24. George Washington would get the next two points, forcing a decisive 5th set.
GW jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the 5th set. Duquesne battled back to tie the score at 6-6. With the score tied at 11-11, an attack error by GW gave the Dukes a 12-11 lead. The Colonials followed with another error, giving the Dukes a two point lead. Kullerkann's kill set up match point at 14-11. Osuchukwu answered with a kill, but another kill by Kullerkann ended the set 15-12 and the match 3-2.
UP NEXT: The Dukes remain at home for the fifth match of their 6-game home stand on Friday when they host Rhode Island (15-7, 6-3 A-10). Match time is at 7:00 p.m.
