QUICK RECAP: The Duquesne women's soccer team dropped a heartbreaking 1-0 double-overtime decision to Rhode Island on Friday afternoon at Rooney Field. The Rams' Chelsea Gates took Nicole Brennan's throw-in and found the back of the net with 52 seconds remaining in the 2nd extra period for the win.
URI had the first scoring opportunity when Ellie Bailes fired a shot form 30 yards out, but was stopped by Dukes' keeper Devon Tabata (7 saves) in the 5th minute. The Rams has another opportunity in the 22nd minute when Amanda Nardella slid the ball over to Dariann Sellitti in the crease. Tabata made the save and the rebound came out to Ari Stanton, but she kicked the ball right into a diving Tabata.
The Dukes had a chance to get on the board in the 42nd minute when Emma Coccia's cross was looking for a charging Amy Vinopal, but it was broken up at the last second by Rhode Island keeper Katie Nickels (6 saves). In the final minute of play in the 1st half, Nickels stopped a rocket shot from Maddie Layman off a 1-timer.
URI had the first scoring chance of the 2nd half when Bailes' corner kick found Samantha Leyh, whose shot was stopped by Cydney Station on the left post. Two minutes after that, Bailes fed Sellitti with a perfect cross, but was broken up at the last second. In the 75th minute, Layman's shot from 30 yards out hit the cross bar. Regulation ended with Kahli Hale's direct kick sailing high.
In the 1st overtime, URI had three shots, but all three were either wide or high.
In the 108th minute, Emma Coccia almost won the match when her diving header was saved by Nickels. A 1:18 later, Gates scored which ended the contest 1-0 in favor of Rhode Island.
