CLEVELAND - Cleveland State's Valerie Stahl's free kick in the 80th minute beat Duquesne keeper Ashley Szalwinski to break a 1-1 tie and give the Vikings a 2-1 victory over the Dukes on Sunday afternoon.
Both teams now have a 1-1-0 record.
The beginning of the contest was pushed back 15 minutes due to rain, but once the match began, the Dukes got on the board early with a Michelle Mooren goal. Mooren rebounded a Morgan Herbert shot past CSU keeper Sarah Wood.
The Dukes held the lead until three minutes into the second half when the Vikings scored off a set play from 30 yards out to tie the contest at 1-1.
The match stayed deadlocked at 1-1 until Stahl's goal with 10:07 remaining.
Duquesne had one more chance in the 89th minute, but could not capitalize on a corner kick.
The Vikings dominated the shot count, 16-5. Szalwinski made seven saves in her first action of the season.
Up next for the Dukes will be a weekend against a pair of Big Ten schools. On Friday, Aug. 26th, the Dukes play Michigan followed by Michigan State on Sunday, Aug. 28th. Both matches are part of the 2011 Michigan Invitational played at U-M Soccer Complex.
