TORONTO - Tut Rauch scored 10 of his game-high 23 points in the fourth quarter as A-Game Hoops, a collection of Canadian former NCAA players and European professionals defeated Duquesne 96-89 in the Dukes' Canadian tour finale at Newnham Sports Centre on the campus of Seneca College in Toronto.
The loss was the first in five games for the Dukes who were playing their third game in 30 hours.
B.J. Monteiro, who fouled out with 2:20 left, led Duquesne with 21 points. Sean Johnson scored 12 of his 18 points in the second half of the game which was played under FIBA rules.
Duquesne led 72-68 early in the fourth quarter before Rauch, who averaged 18.2 ppg. last season in Germany, caught fire. The 6-3 guard keyed a 13-0 run that gave A-Game an 81-72 lead with 4:35 to go.
DU cut it to 84-80 with just over three minutes left before A-Game, which hit 14 3-pointers, hit back-to-back threes to go up 10. Duquesne would get no closer than five the rest of the way.
Andry Sola, who played collegiately at George Washington (1999) and Drake (2001-02) as well as overseas hit four 3-pointers in scoring 19 for A-Game. Isaac Koun, the 11th-leading scorer in Canada last season at Windsor University, added 16.
Duquesne's ability to come back was hindered by a 19-of-32 (including 12-of-20 in the second half) performance from the foul line.
T.J. McConnell had 12 points and Jerry Jones hit three 3-pointers in adding 11 points for DU.
Monteiro, who picked up his fourth foul with 1:30 left in the third quarter, had six rebounds and five assists.
Duquesne, which got back to its hotel from St. Catherines at 12:30 am, following day-night doubleheader wins over A-Game Hoops in Toronto and Brock University at St. Catherines, Ont. yesterday, led 19-16 after one quarter, 44-42 at the half and 67-63 through three quarters.
There were eight ties and 12 lead changes in the physical game.
Duquesne will return to Pittsburgh on Tuesday morning.
NOTES
The game was played under FIBA rules (four 10-minute quarters, wide lane, different timeout structure etc.) ... there was no 24 second shot clock due to mechanical problems.
B.J. Monteiro was Duquesne's leading scorer on the tour with a 19.0 ppg. scoring average ... the others: Sean Johnson (13.2 ppg.), T.J. McConnell (12.6 ppg.), Andre Marhold (11.6 ppg.), Jerry Jones (8.2 ppg.), Eric Evans and P.J. Torres (7.2 ppg.), Mike Talley (6.6 ppg.), Derrick Martin (3.8 ppg.) and Danny Herrera (2.5 ppg.) ... Duquesne averaged 91.4 ppg. as a team.
Marhold and Derrick Martin were the top rebounders on the tour at 4.8 rpg. ... McConnell averaged 4.6 and Monteiro and Johnson 4.4 rpg.
McConnell had 23 assists in the five games, Evans had 18 and Mike Talley 16 ... McConnell had 18 steals and Johnson had 14.
