PITTSBURGH - Sara Scheirman had a match-high 16 kills the Duquesne volleyball team defeated Rhode Island 3-0 on Friday night. The scores of the sets were 25-16, 25-23, 25-12.
The Dukes improved to 16-8 overall and 6-4 in the Atlantic 10 Conference
Allison Foschia had a team-high 16 digs and Taylor Jones recorded a match-high 35 assists.
The Dukes led wire-to-wire in the first set, opening up an early 8-3 advantage. The Duquesne lead would get as high as nine points after back-to-back URI errors to make the score 20-11. Scheirman's kill ended the first set 25-16.
Rhode Island led early-to-midway through the second set. With the Rams up 20-15, the Dukes score seven of the next nine points to tie the set at 22-22. A kill by Foschia and a pair of kills from Scheirman gave the Dukes a 2-0 lead after taking the second set 25-23.
Duquesne jumped out to a 14-3 lead in the third set and never looked back. Ashley Buse's kill ended the set 25-12 and the match 3-0.
The final home match will be on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. when the Dukes host Fordham on Senior Day. Before the match, the department of athletics will honor Liz Homan, Brittany Poling, Sydney Schwab and Nicole Wright.
