MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. - In a battle of cross-town rivals the Duquesne women's soccer team recorded a 1-1 draw with Robert Morris on Sunday afternoon at the North Athletic Complex in Moon Township, Pa.
Senior keeper Gabby Morrin recorded a career-high nine saves while facing 19 shots. Junior defender Laura Tlumack helped by blocking two sure goals just before they crossed the end line.
In the 19th minute, a RMU defender was called for a hand ball in the crease. Senior Kristin Vinicky took the penalty shot and found the back of the net behind RMU keeper Jessica Olin to give the Dukes a 1-0 advantage.
There was an exciting start to the second half. Morrin made a fantastic save on an Ayana Davis shot. DU's Meghan Long won the ball and set up Paige Maroney on the left side, but her shot sailed just wide of the right post.
Four minutes later, Morrin came up with another save on a 16-yard shot by the Colonials' Katie Austin.
RMU finally got on the board in the 80th minute when Emily D'Italia set up Alexa Sarsfield on the right side. The cross was settled by Austin who fired off a shot from 12 yards out. Morrin made the initial save, but could not get to the rebound, which Austin buried to tie the contest at 1-1.
The Dukes had a chance to regain the lead two minutes later on a Vinicky shot, which Austin swatted away.
The Colonials had a chance to win the match in the final seconds when a Davis shot got past Morrin, but Tlumack saved the contest with four seconds remaining with a game-saving clear, sending the match into overtime.
Neither team recorded a shot in the first overtime period.
In the 105th minute, Morrin turned away Davis from point blank range on the right side to preserve the tie. This was the final scoring chance for either team as the contest ended up in a 1-1 draw.
