PITTSBURGH - For the first time in program history, the Duquesne volleyball team completed its first-ever season sweep against Temple after a 3-1 (25-18, 23-25, 25-13, 25-21) victory over the Owls on Friday night.
With the win, DU improves to 19-8 overall and 6-3 in the Atlantic 10 Conference. The 19 wins are the most since 1996 and also ties the most wins since the program was elevated to the Division I level in 1986 (DU also had 19 wins in 1993). The six conference wins equals last season's total.
Sara Scheirman (19 kills, season-high 21 digs) and Allison Foschia (11 kills, 18 digs) recorded double-doubles for DU. Sarah Svorinic had a match-high 48 assists and Amy Palko added 14 digs.
Duquesne led the entire first set, jumping out to an early 9-2 lead and built a 10 point advantage at 22-12. Scheirman's kill ended the set at 25-18.
With the second set tied at 21-21, TU would use three Allison Carr kills and a DU error to tie the match at one set apiece as they took the second set 25-23.
The Dukes made quick work of the Owls in the third set 25-13. Leading 10-9, DU went on a 13-0 en route to a 25-13 win.
Duquesne also led from start-to-finish in the fourth set, but Temple fought the whole way. With the Dukes up six points at 17-11, a 10-5 run to get within a point at 22-21. But two TU attack errors and a Scheirman kill ended the set at 25-21 and the match at 3-1
The Dukes hit the road for a Sunday afternoon match at Rhode Island at 1:00 p.m.
