WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Duquesne (12-6, 1-2) volleyball team came back from 2-0 deficit to record its first Atlantic 10 Conference victory the season after a 3-2 (23-25, 23-25, 25-16, 25-22, 15-11) victory over George Washington on Friday night.
Three Dukes recorded double-doubles - Sarah Scheirman (56 assists, 19 digs), Sara Scheirman (17 kills, 16 digs) and Allison Foschia (15 kills, 21 digs). Liz Homan had a match-best 18 kills.
GW led from start-to-finish in the first set. After jumping out to an early 7-2 lead, the Dukes would fight back to eventually tie the set at 15-15 after a MacKenzie Knox error. On the next play, Knox's kill put the Colonials up by one point at 16-15 and the Colonials would hold on the rest of the set. A kill by Lauren Whyte ended the first set with George Washington winning 25-23.
In the second set, GW built up a seven point lead at 16-9. The Dukes would chip away at the lead and eventually tie the set at 23-23, but back-to-back kills from Rachel Goss would put the Colonials up 2-0 after taking the second set 25-23.
Facing a second consecutive 3-0 defeat, DU built an early lead in the third set and maintained control throughout. A Nicole Wright kill won the set 25-16.
The fourth set was close from beginning to end. Up 24-19, GW held off three set points until Scheirman's kill gave DU the set and tied the match at 2-2 - forcing a fifth and decisive set.
With George Washington leading 7-6 in the fifth set, the Dukes would score five consecutive points to take a 11-7 lead. GW would score the next three points to get within one point at 11-10. Three straight attack errors by GW along with a Foschia kill gave DU a 15-11 set win and a 3-2 match victory.
Duquesne travels to Charlotte for a 7:00 p.m. match on Saturday evening.
NOTES - The Dukes recorded a season-best 99 digs and 71 kills
