Volleyball Wins Fourth Straight - 3-0 Over Rhode Island

PITTSBURGH - The Duquesne volleyball team won its fourth consecutive match after a 3-0 shutout of Rhode Island on Sunday afternoon.

The Dukes (15-6, 4-2 A-10) defeated the Rams (11-10, 2-6 A-10) by scores of 25-18, 25-20, 25-23. The match took just one hour and 25 minutes to complete.

Allison Foschia led the Dukes with a match-high 14 kills and added 10 digs for her 10th double-double of the season. Sara Scheirman had a match-best 16 digs and Sarah Svorinic recorded a match-high 41 assists.

Britta Baarstad led URI with 11 kills and Lindsay Potts had a team-high 11 digs.

DU jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first set and would see leads as high as nine points twice - the later coming at 21-12. The Rams cut the deficit to six points at 24-18, but a Liz Homan kill gave Duquesne the first set 25-18. The Dukes used 16 kills and a .481 hitting percentage to jump ahead in the match 1-0.

The Dukes led the second set from beginning-to-end, winning 25-20. DU had 15 kills and built a nine point lead at 21-12 in the win that put them up 2-0 in the match.

The Rams' Kayla Wilson recorded a block on the first point of the third set which gave URI its first lead of the match. The lead would last until a Wilson service error broke a 17-17 tie to put the Dukes up by one point. The set would see three more ties and with the score deadlocked at 23-23, a URI service error followed by a Foschia kill ended the set at 25-23 and the match 3-0.

The Dukes have a non-conference match on Tuesday night against West Virginia. This is the Dukes' Dig Pink match for the season. All fans are encouraged to wear pink. DU will also be raising money for the Side-Out Foundation. All proceeds award grants to medical research organizations and entities dedicated to providing compassionate support to breast cancer patients and their families.
