Volleyball Defeats Rhode Island 3-2

KINGSTON - The Duquesne volleyball team came back from a 2-0 deficit on Saturday afternoon to defeat Rhode Island 3-2. With the win, the Dukes have jumped out to a 2-0 Atlantic 10 Conference record, 11-5 overall.

Sara Scheirman led the Dukes with a match and career-high 19 kills. She added 14 kills for her fifth double-double of the season. Nicole Wright also recorded a double-double of 10 kills and 21 digs. Amy Palko had a season-best 29 digs.

It looked as if the Rams were going to end DU's three-match winning streak early on, taking the first two sets 25-22 and 25-21.

The third set was played close featuring six ties. With the scored deadlocked at 19-19, Duquesne would score six of the next eight points to win the set 25-21.

After trailing 3-1 early in the fourth set, Duquesne scored six consecutive points and never looked back to tie the match at 2-2 after winning the set 25-20.

In the fifth set, a Scheirman kill broke a 7-7 tie and was the beginning of an 8-0 run that ended the set 15-7 and the match 3-2.

DU remains on the road when they face #23 Saint Louis Oct. 2.
