BRONX, N.Y. - The Duquesne volleyball opened up the 2009 Atlantic 10 Conference season with a 3-1 win over Fordham Friday night. The 27-25, 25-19, 23-25, 25-23 victory moves the Dukes to 10-5, while the Rams fell to 8-8 overall.
The opening set was tight, featuring 15 ties. The Dukes held off set point at 25-24 and came back with three straight points - kills from Nicole Wright and Jessica Artman and a Rams attack error by Christi Griffiths.
Wright paced the Dukes attack in the second set with seven of the team's 17 kills. With the score tied at 14-14, a solo Liz Homan kill gave DU a lead they would not rescind. Wright ended the set with back-to-back kills as Duquesne jumped out to a 2-0 match lead after winning the second set 25-19.
The third set was another tight contest. With the score tied at 23-23, the Rams got two straight kills from Katie Wells and Sara Friede to win the set 25-23.
Fordham jumped out to an early 5-1 lead in the fourth set before the Rams committed four consecutive attack errors to tie the score at 5-5. DU saw its first lead of the set at 15-14 after a Homan kill. The teams would play it close the rest of the way and with Fordham leading 23-22, the Dukes rattled off three straight kills - two from Artman and one from Homan to end the set 25-23 and the match 3-1.
Homan tied a career-best with a match best seven blocks (2 solo). Wright recorded her fourth consecutive double-double with 14 kills and 12 digs. Sara Scheirman had a team-best 15 digs.
The Dukes stay on the road for a 4:00 p.m. match at Rhode Island on Saturday.
