WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Duquesne volleyball team dropped to 14-13, 4-8 A-10 on the season after their 3-1 (25-18, 21-25, 25-15, 25-21) loss at George Washington Friday night. With the victory, the Colonials (20-8, 7-4 A-10) sweep the season series from the Dukes and clinch a berth in the Atlantic 10 Championship.
The Dukes were led by Sara Scheirman's team-high 16 kills and 12 digs. Ashley Buse added 10 kills, four digs and three block assists. Chelsea Tillotson assisted on 36 of Duquesne's 46 kills in the match.
With the first set deadlocked at 10-10, GW went on a 9-3 run a 19-13 lead. DU would not see a lead the rest of the way and dropped the set, 25-18.
The second set featured eight ties, the last coming at 15-15 before Nicole Wrigh's kill that game the Dukes the lead for good at 16-15. The Colonials would get within two points at 23-21 before back-to-back GW attack errors gave the set to Duquesne, 25-21.
A 9-2 GW run followed an 8-8 tie giving the Colonials a 17-11 lead in the third set. Duquesne could only muster four more points the rest of the way as George Washington coasted to a 25-15 win to take a 2-1 match lead.
Five DU errors spotted GW a 12-5 lead in the fourth set. The Dukes would chip away at the deficit and narrow the gap to one point at 19-18. However, the Colonials would score the next three points and eventually take the set 25-21 and the match 3-1.
Duquesne retuns home Sunday versus Dayton. Jessica Artman along with Tillotson will be honored in a pre-match ceremony for senior day. Match time is 1:00 P.M.
