PITTSBURGH - It took almost two hours, but the Duquesne volleyball held off Rhode Island 3-2 Friday night at the Palumbo Center.
Nicole Wright had a match-best 16 kills, Liz Homan added 15 and Jessica Artman 16 for the Dukes (14-12, 4-7). DU totaled 61 kills, just one shy of tying their conference high for the 2009 season. Five players recorded double digit digs for DU in Sara Scheirman (21), Amy Palko (16), Chelsea Tillotson (14), Wright (14)Katie Goss (12) and Sydney Schwab (10).
Duquesne fell behind in the match after dropping the first set 25-16. The Dukes would win the next two sets - 25-20 and 25-16 before URI forced the decisive set after winning set number four 25-14. A Rams attach error broke a 6-6 tie in the third set and DU never looked back as they took the set 15-11 and the match 3-0.
DU hits the road next weekend when they face George Washington Fri. Nov. 6 at 7:00 p.m. Duquesne returns to the Palumbo Center for Senior Day on Nov. 8 against Dayton.
