PITTSBURGH - The Duquesne volleyball team ended a five match losing streak after their 3-0 (25-14, 25-12, 25-16) shutout victory over La Salle on Sunday afternoon. The Dukes needed only one hour and 12 minutes to take the win and improve to 13-11, 3-6 on the season.
Liz Homan recorded a match-high 11 kills while hitting .429. Amy Palko had a team-best 13 digs and setters Sarah Svorinic and Chelsea Tillotson combined for 33 assists.
The Dukes jumped out to an early 12-3 lead and held the Explorers to a .000 hitting percentage as they took the first set 25-14. DU used an early 7-0 run in their 25-12 second set win. Eight players combined for 16 kills as Duquesne took a 2-0 match lead.
La Salle would not go down easily in the third set as they took a four point lead at 11-7. Sara Scheirman and Tillotson's block tied the contest at 12-12 and an Explorer's attack error capped a 6-1 run to give the Dukes a lead they would no rescind. A Tillotson kill ended the set at 25-16 and the match 3-0.
Thursday night, DU hosts nationally ranked Saint Louis. Match time is 7:00 p.m.
Today was Duquesne's "Dig Pink" game. DU is helping in the fight against breast cancer with their "Dig Pink" program. Money was collected and pink t-shirts were sold to raise money for the Side-Out Foundation.
