CINCINNATI - The Duquesne volleyball dropped their fifth straight conference match after their 3-0 (25-16, 26-24, 25-22) loss Saturday evening against Xavier. The Dukes fall to 12-10, 2-5 A-10 while the Musketeers improve to 12-9, 5-2 A-10.
XU scored the first four points of the match and led wire-to-wire in the first set. The closest DU got was one point at 12-11 before Xavier scored seven straight points to take the 19-11 lead. Michelle Matia's kill at set point gave the Musketeers the first-set win, 25-16.
Duquesne jumped out to an early 8-3 lead in the second set before XU went on an 8-3 run of their own to tie the set at 11-11. The Musketeers would jump out to a 19-14 lead, but the Dukes would fight back to tie the set at 22-22 before eventually falling 26-24. After splitting the third set's first 40 points, the Musketeers ended the match with a 5-2 run and took the set, 25-22, ending the match, 3-0.
The Dukes had five players with seven kills - Sara Scheirman, Nicole Wright, Ashley Buse, Jessica Artman and Liz Homan. Scheirman led the team with 15 digs and Sarah Svorinic had 18 assists.
The next match will be Oct. 23 at the Palumbo Center versus Temple.
