PITTSBURGH - The Duquesne volleyball team dropper their third straight match after their 3-1 (24-26, 25-21, 25-18, 28-26) loss against George Washington on Sunday afternoon. The Dukes fall to 12-8, 2-3 and the Colonials improve to 14-6, 4-2.
Sara Scheirman and Nicole Wright each recorded a double-double - Scheirman with a team-best 16 kills and 17 digs and Wright with 12 kills and 15 digs. Chelsea Tillotson and Sarah Svorinic combined for 48 assists.
After falling behind 3-2 early in the first set, the Dukes would quickly tie and gain the lead after scoring four straight points. DU would hang on to the lead the rest of the set, with the exception of a pair of ties. The Colonials fought off a pair of set points to tie the score at 24-24 before back-to-back kills by Wright gave the Dukes the 26-24 win.
The second set was played very close with neither team having a lead of more than two points through the first 43 points. With GW up 22-21, a kill by Leah Hill and two straight attack errors gave the Colonials a 25-21 win.
George Washington only committed two errors and led from wire-to-wire to take the third set 25-18. GW came opened up the set with a 10-3 lead and never looked back. The Colonials took advantage of eight Duquesne miscues to take a 2-1 match lead.
The fourth set was very similar to the second set, as the largest lead for either team was two points. Duquesne had a set point at 24-23, but a Wright service error tied the score. The teams would split the next four points to make the score 26-26, but back-to-back Duquesne errors gave GW the set and match win, 28-26 and 3-1.
A difficult road trip is ahead for the Dukes as they visit Dayton on Friday and Xavier on Saturday.
