PITTSBURGH - Liz Homan had a career-high 14 kills in Duquesne 3-1 (25-16, 25-9, 20-25, 25-8) win over Charlotte Sunday afternoon at the Palumbo Center.
Amy Palko (16), Jessica Atman (13) and Tricia Mullen (12) all recorded double digits in digs. Chelsea Tillotson had a match-high 42 assists. Amanda Humphrey had a season-high seven blocks. Brittany Poling added 10 kills.
The Dukes controlled the first set, recording 16 kills in the 25-16 victory. After giving up the first point of the match, DU scored 15 of the next 21 points to open up an eight point lead. Charlotte would cut the lead to five points at 20-15, but Duquesne stopped any comeback taking the first set 25-16.
In the second set, DU took advantage of 10 49ers errors while committing only a pair. The red and blue yielded only nine points the entire set as they took a 2-0 match lead after the 25-9 win.
Charlotte's Kathleen Hicks' kill broke a 12-12 tie in the third set. The Dukes did not record back-to-back points the rest of the way as they fell 25-20.
DU rebounded in the fourth set, getting out to an early 10-4 lead. The Dukes scored six consecutive points to end the set 25-8 and win the match 3-1.
Duquesne plays their final non-conference match of the season Wednesday night against Robert Morris. Match time is 7:00 p.m.
MATCH NOTES
- This was the first-ever victory for Duquesne over Charlotte. The Dukes dropped their three previous matches against the 49ers
- Not only was this the first win against Charlotte, but this was the first time Duquesne won a set against the A-10 rival. The 49ers shut out the Dukes 3-0 in their three matches
- With the win, their 11th of the 2008 season, Duquesne has exceeded their total win total from the 2007 season
