KENT, OHIO - In the first match of the Kent State Mizuno Open, the Duquesne volleyball team fell to Ohio State 3-0 (25-19, 25-15, 25-21). Jessica Artman had a team-high 10 kills, Chelsea Tillotson recorded a team-best 25 assists and Tricia Mullen had 14 digs for the Dukes who fell to 9-3 on the season.
DU, playing their first Big Ten Conference school since 1997, got out to a 9-7 advantage in the first set, but four consecutive points by the Buckeyes gave OSU a lead they would not rescind, taking the first set 25-19.
Ohio State's Anna Szerszen's kill broke an early tie in the second set and put the Buckeyes ahead for good, as they took a 2-0 match lead after the 25-15 set win.
The Dukes got out to a 15-9 lead in the third set, but a 10-3 OSU run gave the Buckeyes their first lead since winning the first point of the set, 19-18. Five Ohio State kills and a Duquesne hitting error gave OSU the set 25-21 and the match 3-0.
Duquesne plays host Kent State Friday evening before taking on Chicago State Saturday at 4:00 p.m.
