FLAGSTAFF - In the first day of the Fiesta Bowl Classic, the Duquesne volleyball team defeated Navy 3-0 Friday afternoon, improving their overall record to 8-1.
Jessica Artman had a game-high 15 kills while hitting a career-high .737 and Chelsea Tillotson led the match with 30 assists. Tricia Mullen and Melanie McKain had a team-best eight digs apiece.
In the first set, an Artman kill with the Dukes trailing 22-21 was the first of four straight points scored by DU. A Navy attack error followed by back-to-back kills from Amanda Humphrey and Liz Homan gave Duquesne a 25-22 set victory.
Brittany Poling's kill broke an 18-18 tie in the second set to give the Dukes a lead they would not relinquish. DU took advantage of four Navy errors and had kills by Mullen and Tillotson to take set number two, 25-20.
Duquesne jumped out to an early lead in the third set and never looked back winning 25-15. The Dukes had 17 kills in the third set as they took the match 3-0 and improved their record to 8-1 on the season.
Duquesne has a pair of matches tomorrow beginning with Hampton at 1:00 p.m. followed by host team Northern Arizona at 10:00 p.m. The match against NAU can be seen by logging on to www.bigskytv.org.
