Women's Soccer Defeats Youngstown State in Overtime 2-1

Sept. 11, 2008

Box Score

PITTSBURGH - Kelly Shank's goal 34 seconds into overtime gave the Duquesne women's soccer team their first win of the season, 2-1 over Youngstown State Thursday evening.

The Dukes got on the board early in the first half on an own goal 2:34 into the contest. The Penguins countered in the 32nd minute as Brittny Humphrey's shot off the post found its way behind Dukes' keeper Gabby Morrin to tie the contest at 1-1.

Both teams clamped down on defense as neither team had a scoring opportunity until Shaina Geisler was stopped at point blank range by YSU's keeper Mariah Snyder with 12 minutes remaining in the contest.

The Dukes had a scoring opportunity in the final minute of regulation, but Shelley Esposito's shot was wide of the net and for the second consecutive match, the Dukes were headed to overtime.

In the extra period, the Dukes gain control right off the bat as Shank, playing in her first collegiate match, found the back of the net 34 seconds in the extra period giving DU their first victory of the season.

Duquesne will take on cross-town rival Robert Morris in Moon Township on Sunday afternoon. Kickoff is at 1:00 p.m.
