PITTSBURGH - The Duquesne volleyball team finished the 2008 Duquesne/Robert Morris Invitational with a perfect 4-0 record after their 3-0 victory over Loyola Saturday night. Junior Jessica Artman was voted the invitational's most valuable player and Tricia Mullen was named to the all-tournament team.
Brittany Poling had a game-high nine kills and Mullen had a game-best 12 digs. Liz Homan led both teams with seven total blocks (two solo).
The Dukes took the first set quickly, yielding only nine points to the Greyhounds. DU took advantage of 10 Loyola errors in the first set and recorded four service aces.
Loyola played Duquesne tougher in the second set. After falling behind by seven points early on, the Greyhounds trimmed their deficit to four points at 21-17. The Dukes held off any momentum Loyola had to take the second set 25-18.
Duquesne fell behind early in the third set, but after a Loyola service error and an Amanda Humphrey kill to give DU a 6-5 lead, they never looked back winning the set 25-14 and the match 3-0.
This marks the second straight season that the Dukes have gone undefeated in their Labor Day weekend invitational. Last season, DU defeated North Dakota State, UNC Greensboro and Bucknell.
Duquesne heads to Baltimore, Md. next weekend for the UMBC Tournament. DU will play Niagara Sept. 5 and Maryland Eastern Shore and UMBC Sept. 6. The next home match will be the Atlantic 10 opener versus George Washington on Sept. 26.
