Dukes Wrap Up Fall Schedule at Akron Invite

Duquesne's men's swimming team completed the fall portion of its schedule with a fourth place showing out of 10 schools at the Akron Invitational, Dec. 5-7.

Day one of the three-day event featured three individual second place finishes. Sophomore Edward LeBlanc was second in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:33.08, freshman Roman Becicka was second in the 200 IM in 1:54.26 and sophomore Jim O'Hara finished second in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 21.17. The Dukes also finished first in the 400 medley relay and second in the 200 free relay.

On Saturday, Becicka set a school record in the 400 IM with a second place time of 4:04.04. Three other swimmers captured gold medals on the day as O'Hara placed first in the 100 butterfly with a time of 49.96, LeBlanc won the 200 freestyle in 1:39.93 and junior Ian Walsh won the 100 breaststroke in 57.47. In addition, the 800 freestyle relay turned in a second place performance with a time of 6:56.12.

On the final day, Becicka opened the competition with a first place finish in the 1,650-yard freestyle, winning by nearly 14 seconds in 16:02.22. Sophomore Greg Matuszewski followed with a third place showing in the 200 backstroke in 1:54.41 before LeBlanc secured gold in the 100 free in 45.34. Walsh added a third place finish in the 200 breaststroke in 2:07.79 and O'Hara placed third in the 200 butterfly in 1:54.09.

The Dukes are finished competing for the semester. They will train for 10 days in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. during Christmas break, before returning to competition on Saturday, Jan. 10 when the take on Cleveland State and Xavier in Cleveland.
