PITTSBURGH - Rhode Island's Caitlyn Welsh recorded a double-double of a match-high 15 kills and 12 digs as the Rams completed the sweep of Duquesne 3-1 (25-23, 25-22, 20-25, 25-22) Friday night.
The Dukes fall to 15-12 overall and 3-8 in the Atlantic 10 Conference.
Playing her final match on the Palumbo Center floor, Amanda Humphrey recorded a match-best five blocks. Liz Homan had a team-best 14 kills. Sarah Svorinic led DU with 39 assists and Tricia Mullen has a team-high 17 digs.
The match was tied at 23-23 in the first set, but a URI kill followed by a Duquesne hitting error gave the Rams the opening set 25-23.
The second set was also wire-to-wire, until a DU service error broke a 21-21 tie. Two Dukes errors and a Welsh kill put the visitors up 2-0 after the 25-22 victory.
Duquesne opened up the third set with a 14-7 lead. Rhode Island cut the deficit to one point at 18-17, but could not overtake the lead as the Dukes won the third set 25-19.
DU took an early 7-1 lead in the fourth set and held the lead for the majority of the set. URI slowly climbed back in the set and eventually tied things up at 23-23. The Rams used a Duquesne attack error followed by a kill to win the set 25-23 and the match 3-1.
This was the final home match of the 2008 season for the Dukes who conclude the regular season at Dayton (11/14) and Xavier (11/15).
