PITTSBURGH - The Duquesne women's soccer team closed out their regular season with a 3-1 loss to St. Bonaventure Saturday evening. Needing a win or a tie tonight to qualify for an Atlantic 10 Championship berth, the Dukes will now need Dayton to defeat La Salle tomorrow afternoon to secure a spot in the championship.
The Bonnies scored the match's first two goals just over four minutes apart. Anna Cunningham and Marilyn Wargo each found the back of the net for SBU.
Samantha Kaiser set up Annie Reid to get DU within one goal at 2-1 in the 49th minute. The tally was Reid's team-leading sixth of the 2008 year.
St. Bonaventure closed out the match scoring after Hannah Lapp converted a penalty kick.
DU currently is tied with La Salle with 17 points for the sixth and final playoff spot. If Dayton were to defeat La Salle, Duquesne would quality for the A-10 Championship because DU has the tie-breaker over the Explorers. A La Salle win or tie would eliminate the Dukes from post-season contention.
