PITTSBURGH - Temple's Yun Yi Zhang had a double-double of a match-best 25 kills and 11 digs as Temple defeated the Duquesne volleyball team 3-1 (25-22, 17-25, 26-24, 25-11) Friday night at the Palumbo Center.
Jessica Artman led the Dukes with 18 kills. Liz Homan had 11 kills and hit .348. Chelsea Tillotson recorded a double-double of team-highs 36 assists and 13 digs for DU who fell to 12-6 overall and 1-2 in the Atlantic 10 Conference.
Ariel Pierre had a match-high 19 digs for the Owls (11-6, 4-0) who have won five in a row and eight of their past 10 matches.
Leading by seven points (14-7) midway through the first set, Temple battled back to tied the contest at 21-21. Unfortunately, the Dukes committed three errors coupled with a Zhang kill to give the Owls the win in the first set 25-22.
DU once again got out to a seven point lead (17-10) in the second set, but did not let TU back in the game. Artman's kill ended the set with Duquesne prevailing 25-17.
Temple led for the first 43 points of the third set before back-to-back kills by Amanda Humphrey and Artman tied the score at 22-22. After an Owls timeout, the Dukes took their first lead of the set (23-22) on an Artman kill. Cayleigh Ashman would even the score for TU before another Artman kill which gave DU a 24-23 lead. But Duquesne could not convert at set point as a Zhang kill, an Elizabeth Prang ace and a Dukes error gave Temple the set 26-24.
In the fourth set, the Owls lead from start-to-finish. With the score 10-8, Temple went on a 7-0 run to take a 17-8 lead. DU could not generate any more momentum as TU took the fourth set 25-11 and the match 3-1.
The Dukes hope to recover Sunday afternoon when they take on La Salle at the Palumbo Center. Match time is 1:00 p.m.
