PITTSBURGH - Tricia Mullen's double-double of 11 kills and 12 digs helped the Duquesne volleyball team improved their record to 12-5 on the season with a 3-1 (14-25, 25-20, 26-24, 25-21) victory over cross-town rival Robert Morris Wednesday night at the Palumbo Center.
Jessica Artman's 13 kills, Chelsea Tillotson's 44 assists, Amy Palko's 19 digs and Amanda Humphrey's six blocks were all match-highs. The Dukes got off to a slow start as the Colonials took advantage DU's nine errors and .032 hitting percentage to win the first set. With the visitors leading 14-12, RMU scored seven straight points to take 21-12 lead. Duquesne would only score a pair of the points the rest of the set as Robert Morris took the early lead 1-0.
Artman's kill broke an 8-8 tie and put the Dukes ahead for good in the second set. The DU defense held RMU to a .056 hitting percentage as their evened the match at a game apiece after the 25-20 victory.
The Colonials jumped out to a 19-12 lead in the third set. But the Dukes mounted one of their best comebacks this season by going on a 12-5 run to tie the set at 24-24. A Humphrey kill followed by an RMU error gave the Dukes a 26-24 win and a 2-1 match lead.
Duquesne and Robert Morris battled hard in the fourth set that featured seven ties. The Colonials evened the score at 20-20 after a Dukes error, but scored five of the next six points to win the set 25-21 and the match 3-1.
DU returns to the Atlantic 10 Conference slate this weekend - Friday night against Temple at 7:00 p.m. and Sunday afternoon versus La Salle at 1:00 p.m.
