MOON TOWNSHIP, PA - Tuesday night was the 31st meeting between Robert Morris and Duquesne. The Dukes, winners of 23 matches of the previous 30 matches against RMU, dropped their second consecutive match to the cross-town rival Colonials, 3-1.
Game one went back and forth with no team having a lead of more than four points. With the score tied at 28-28 a Jessica Artman kill gave the Dukes a one point lead at game point, but RMU's Cassie Lee's kill notched the game at 29-29. Jenni Gross' kill put DU up 30-29 and Kristin Garnett ended the game with a left handed finesse tap that fell between the Colonials' Jennifer Stambaugh and Amanda Graham as Duquesne took game one 31-29.
Duquesne played Robert Morris tight in game two. With the score deadlocked at 28-28, RMU got a pair of kills from Lee and Emily Wolthuis to take the game 30-28.
A 5-0 run midway through the third game gave the Colonials a 26-19 advantage which they did not relinquish winning 30-22.
DU fell behind 17-8 in the fourth game, but a comeback fell short as RMU took the game 30-27 and the match 3-1.
Jenni Gross led the Dukes with 16 kills followed by Jessica Artman's career-best 15 kills. Kristin Garnett had 41 assists and Dana McLaughlin had 16 digs to lead Duquesne (7-9).
After a 10-day break, the Dukes resume their Atlantic 10 schedule as they will face Fordham on Fri. Oct. 5 at 7:00 p.m. and Rhode Island on Sun. Oct. 7 at 1:00 p.m.
