CINCINNATI - Jenni Gross' game-best 17 kills was not enough as Duquesne opened the 2007 Atlantic 10 season with a 3-0 loss against host Xavier Friday night.
With the Dukes trailing 25-23 in the first game, Gross' kill got the Dukes within one point at 25-24. After a Xavier timeout, the Musketeers (10-5, 1-0) rattled off five straight points to take game one 30-25.
Game two was similar to game one as the Dukes trailed by one point late by a score of 26-25. XU's Lauren Kaminsky's kill and a DU error put the Musketeers up 28-25. After a Duquesne timeout, Dana McLaughlin's kill brought the Dukes within two points at 28-26. After a service error, Xavier's Jenn Welsh's kill ended the second game 30-26.
A pair of service aces by Gross in the third game gave DU a 17-16 lead, but three straight errors by DU after a Jill Quayle kill put Xavier in the lead 20-17. The Dukes got the lead down to two points at 22-20, but could not rebound as XU took game three 30-23 and the match 3-0.
Nicole Wright kept her spectacular freshman campaign going with 10 kills and 11 digs. Kristin Garnett had a team-high 39 assists. Amy Palko added nine digs.
The Dukes have a tough task at hand Saturday afternoon at 5:00 p.m. as they face #18 Dayton. The Flyers survived a marathon match Friday night against Saint Louis, improving to 14-0, 1-0 on the season.
