CINCINNATI - The Duquesne volleyball team completed their most challenging weekend of the season with a 3-0 loss to #18 Dayton Saturday afternoon.
The Dukes got out to a promising start in the first game as a Dana McLaughlin kill put the Red and Blue up 8-7. The Flyers came back with three of the next four points to take a 10-9 lead. Jamie-Lee Richards got the hot hand as her four kills helped UD score 20 of the next 27 points to take game one 30-16.
In the second game, a pair of service aces by Nicole Wright gave DU a 5-1 lead. A pair of kills by Richards coupled with an attack error cut Duquesne's lead to 5-4. Kristen Hammergren's kill gave the Dukes their last lead of the game at 6-4 before Dayton came storming with six unanswered point to take a 10-6 advantage. The Flyers would score four consecutive points on three occasions as they won game two 30-15.
In the third game DU played Dayton even through the first 38 points at 19-19. However, Dayton (15-0, 2-0) used four kills by Robynne Green late in the contest to take the third game 30-22 and the match 3-0.
Hammergren led the Dukes (7-8, 0-2) with six kills on 12 attempts (.500). Kristin Garnett had 16 assists and McLaughlin and Katie Goss had six digs each.
The Dukes step out of the Atlantic 10 Conference schedule Tuesday night with a match at Robert Morris. Duquesne returns home Fri. Oct. 5 against Fordham. Both matches begin at 7:00 p.m.
