Farmville, Va. - Junior Brendan Madden won the Longwood University Poplar Hill Golf Intercollegiate individual crown with a three-under par, and new tournament-record, score of 213 (69-70-74) at The Manor Golf Club's 7,214-yard, par 72 course on Tuesday. This was the first event of Duquesne's five tournament fall schedule.
Madden (Jefferson Hills, Pa. / Thomas Jefferson) and Gardner-Webb's Ryan Bell needed to play a little longer than the other 72 golfers as they finished in a first place tie. The Pittsburgh-area native won the playoff with a birdie on the third hole. Gardner-Webb won the team title, finishing with a 54-hole 869, 16 strokes ahead of host Longwood's second place 885.
With his score of 213, Madden set a new Duquesne three-round record, topping Steve Seiden's 219 from 2003.
The Dukes finished eighth in the 14-team tournament. Duquesne continues their fall schedule this weekend in Lewisburg, Pa. in the two-day Bucknell Invitational beginning Friday, September 14, 2007.
