LYNCHBURG, Va. - Duquesne opened the 2007 volleyball season with a 3-2 victory over Evansville in day one of the Liberty Invitational at Lynchburg, Va.
The match went back and forth as the Dukes took game one by a 30-22 margin before the Purple Aces came back with a 30-20 game two win. DU held off UE in the third game 30-26. Evansville won game four 30-23.
In the fifth and decisive game, Nicole Wright's kill broke a 10-10 tie and put the red and blue up for good as they took the game 15-13.
Wright's 19 kills tied the game-high. Kristin Garnett had a game-best 51 assists while Wright and Dana McLaughlin led DU with 25 digs. Kristen Hammergren led the Dukes with five blocks.
The tournament concludes tomorrow as the Red & Blue have a pair of matches - the host Liberty Flames at 10:30 a.m. and Howard at 3:30 p.m. The Dukes' home opener is one week from tonight as they host North Dakota State in the Courtyard by Marriott Invitational at 7:00 p.m.
