KINGSTON, R.I - A pair of service aces from Rhode Island's Kalyn Klaess sandwiched between a Caitlyn Welch kill gave the Rams' a 16-14 game five win and a 3-2 match victory over Duquesne Saturday afternoon.
The loss drops the Dukes to 10-17 overall and 2-10 in the Atlantic 10 Conference.
The Dukes took game one 30-23 without sacrificing a lead the entire game. URI broke a 28-28 tie in game two after a pair of DU attack errors gave the Rams a 30-28 win. Game three was tied at 29-29, but a Dukes service error followed by a Lauren McIntosh kill put the Rams up 2-1 with the 31-29 win.
Duquesne rebounded to dominate game four 30-16. Once again, DU did not trail the entire game.
With the match tied at 2-2, the teams went into the deciding game. Things looked good for the Dukes, as a Jenni Gross kill gave DU match point at 14-11. However, the Rams came back with five unanswered point to take game five 16-11 and the match 3-2/
Kristin Garnett had a match-high 65 assists while Dana McLaughlin's 18 kills was team-best while adding 19 digs. Amy Palko set a personal-best with 29 digs. Nicole Wright registered a double-double of 17 kills and 27 digs. Jessica Artman, Gross, and Kristen Hammergren all had double figure kills with 15, 13 and 11 respectively. Katie Goss recorded 19 digs while Garnett added 11.
Duquesne closes out A-10 play Saturday night against Saint Louis at the Palumbo Center. Kristin Garnett, Jenni Gross, Lindsay Hess and Dana McLaughlin will be honored in a senior recognition ceremony before the match.
