LORETTO - Duquesne's dominance of Saint Francis continued Tuesday night as the Dukes won for the 22nd time in 23 tries against the Red Flash with their 3-1 victory in DU's final non-conference match of the season.
The Dukes came out the gates in the first game with a 6-1 lead behind kills from McLaughlin, Gross and Tillotson. DU extended their lead to 13-5 before the Red Flash rattled off eight consecutive points to tie the score at 13-13. A SFU service error gave the Dukes a lead (14-13) they would not relinquish the rest of the game. With Duquesne leading 29-22, Saint Francis' Shirley Miller's attempt was wide right giving the Dukes game one 30-22.
Much like the first game, Duquesne took control after breaking an early tie. A Red Flash service error gave the Dukes a 9-8 lead which they maintained the rest of the game winning 30-26.
Leading 11-9 in the third game, Saint Francis won 10 of the 11 points to take a 21-10 lead. The Dukes battled back, cutting the Red Flash's advantage to four points at 29-25, but could a Keisha Biggs kill game SFU game four 30-25.
The first half of game four went back-and-forth as the teams were tied at 14-14 through the first. SFU took a 21-18 lead after a Rachel Capizzi service ace rolled over the net. The Dukes could only muster a pair of points the rest of the game as the Red Flash won game four 30-20 forcing a deciding game five.
Duquesne took over in the deciding game, as 1-1 tied quickly swelled into a 12-3 DU advantage. A SFU comeback fell short as the Dukes won the game 15-9 and the match 3-2.
Jenni Gross tied a career-high by hitting .500 and had a game-high 18 kills. The setting duo of Kristin Garnett and Chelsea Tillotson combined for xxx assists and Amy Palko had a game-best 19 digs.
The Dukes continue their road trip this weekend with games at Temple (10/12) and La Salle (10/13).
