PITTSBURGH - The Duquesne rowing team opened the 2007-08 season on a hot Saturday afternoon on the Allegheny River for the Head of the Ohio Regatta. The event, which is one of the largest in the country, featured over 500 entries and was represented by 40 cities from the United States and Canada.
Duquesne had nine entries in five events highlighted by the Open 8 "A" Boat in making program history with their top three finish. This is the first time since DU became a Division I program that an Open 8+ boat has placed in the top three. Their time of 15:53.6 was ahead of some of the premier rowing programs such as Maryland, West Virginia and Villanova.
Three boats also earned medals - the Women's 2x (double) and Women's Lightweight 8+ both finished second with respective times of 18:36.5 and 16:23.1 while the Women's Lightweight 4+ "A" Boat took bronze out of 6 boats crossing in 16:55.4.
Coach Joe Setting said, "Our performance was strong in its first outing of the season. We had a solid showing against some very good competition."
