RICHMOND - An Audra Mathews shot from 30 yards out found the back of the net at the 87:23 mark to break a 1-1 tie and give Duquesne (6-4, 3-1) their third victory in a row, 2-1 at Richmond.
The match remained scoreless until Shannon Rengers put a Samantha Kaiser serve behind Spiders' keeper Kate Hudson to give the Dukes a 1-0 advantage at 42:39.
The Dukes were struck a blow when Shelley Esposito was issued a red card at 63:30 leaving DU shorthanded with only 10 players on the field. Richmond capitalized on the opportunity 14 minutes later when Kristen Stalter took a long pass from Nora Mann to put the ball past Dukes' keeper Brittany Findley at 77:41.
Still down one woman, Mathews' late goal sealed the victory for Duquesne and gave the Dukes their third consecutive victory.
The Dukes return home Friday night to host Dayton at 7:30 p.m. before their match Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. against Xavier.
Game Notes
This is the longest winning streak for the DU women's soccer team since Oct. 2-9 when they had victories over Charlotte, Saint Joseph's and Temple.
Mathews' goal gave her 20 on her career which ties her with Erica Carey for most all-time in program history.
The Dukes have won two matches in a row against the Spiders.
