PITTSBURGH - Hillary Otte's 14 kills led Xavier over Duquesne 3-0 Sunday afternoon at the Palumbo Center. The Dukes fall to 10-15, 2-8 on the season.
Game one saw seven ties, including both teams deadlocked at 21-21. A pair to Dukes errors gave XU a read they would no relinquish taking game one 30-26.
A 13-2 run Musketeers' after a 9-9 tie gave XU a commanding 22-11 lead as they cruised to a 30-15 win.
Xavier held off a late Duquesne comeback in the third game. Down 24-15, the Dukes scored eight consecutive points to get within a point at 24-23 behind the serving of Amy Palko. XU was too much for DU and took the third game 30-28 and the match 3-0.
Palko had a game-high 22 digs and Kristin Garnett had a team-best 29 assists. Dana McLaughlin's 12 kills was team-high followed by Jenni Gross and Nicole Wright with 10. Wright added 12 digs.
The Dukes have a two-game road trip starting Nov. 1 at Saint Louis followed by a Nov. 3 match at Rhode Island. Duquesne closes out their home schedule Nov. 10 against Saint Louis before their final match of the 2007 season the following at West Virginia.
Sunday was the 2007 "Dig for the Cure" match as the Dukes helped the fight against breast cancer by raising money for the Susan G. Komen For the Cure. The money raised from today's match goes directly to the Pittsburgh Chapter of the Komen Foundation. This season marks the third time the Duquesne volleyball team has taken part in the "Dig for the Cure" program. The Dukes have raised more than $6,000 the past two years for the Pittsburgh Chapter of the Susan G. Komen For the Cure.
