PITTSBURGH, PA - Duquesne returned to the win column with a 3-0 Atlantic 10 victory over visiting La Salle Sunday afternoon at the A.J. Palumbo Center. Senior Amanda Haeg paced the Red & Blue (7-12, 1-1) with 18 kills and 16 digs while junior Jenni Gross added 12 kills hitting .478 making just one error on 23 swings. Freshman setter Chelsea Tillotson recorded 49 assists and 11 digs.
La Salle (6-12, 0-2) was led by Brittany Hanley's 10 kills and Carolyn Judge with a match-best 19 digs.
The Explorers took an early 5-3 lead on three-straight points and inched their edge to a 20-15 margin before the Dukes served three consecutive points for a 20-18 reach. After a side out, the Dukes' Haeg served for five straight giving them a 23-21 lead. La Salle would lead 24-23 on a 3-0 spree and led 27-26 before Duquesne gained a 29-27 margin. DU would win game one 30-28.
Duquesne snagged an 8-3 lead in game two serving for five straight points and mirrored that effort to take a 15-9 advantage. La Salle would only get to within a 28-17 grasp, but the Dukes would maintain control and take game two 30-19 on a La Salle service error.
Game three saw the Dukes up 10-6 before the Explorer snuck to a 14-12 reach on two kills and an ace. A Duquesne block and kill put the host up 16-12 and a 9-2 scoring drive gave Duquesne a 25-15 lead they would not surrender. DU would take the game and match with a 30-19 margin.
Duquesne held a 56-39 advantage in kills and a 57-47 edge in digs. The Dukes hit .355 (56-13-121) for the match while the Explorers struggled hitting only .148 (39-21-122).
The Dukes, which overcame a five-match losing skid, return to action this coming weekend hosting George Washington Sept. 29 and Charlotte Oct. 1 at the Palumbo Center.
