Dukes Fall 3-2 to IPFW in Invite Title Match

Duquesne and IPFW matched-up in a battle of the undefeated for bragging rights of the 2006 Omni William Penn Invitational Saturday night at the A.J. Palumbo Center. The contest would go the distance as the visiting Mastodons would take a 3-2 win over the Dukes for a perfect 4-0 mark in Invitational play.

Senior Amanda Haeg and junior Jenni Gross were named to the All-Tournament Team posting strong efforts throughout the two-day event. Haeg led the Dukes vs. IPFW with 18 kills and added 16 digs while Gross collected 16 kills and six blocks. Also hitting double digits was junior Dana McLaughlin with 11 kills and 10 digs, junior Lindsay Hess with 23 digs, junior Laura Kastein with 15 digs and freshman Chelsea Tillotson with 12 digs and a team-high 33 assists.

IPFW was led by Cynara Martins' 20 kills and Peachy Jankowski's 26 digs. Jessica Dominiak had 58 assists and tournament MVP Claire Jackson posted a match-best nine blocks.

Duquesne opened the contest taking a 30-28 win in game one before falling 30-22 mainly due to poor hitting is the second contest of the series. The Dukes suffered more of the same in game three which saw the Mastodons hit .438 (16-2-32) while DU recorded just seven kills. Game four was the Red & Blue's come-back point with a 30-23 margin which featured 17 kills and a .349 hitting percentage (17-2-43). Game five saw IPFW take an 8-3 lead and the Dukes would not get closer than a 12-8 reach with the Mastodons winning 15-8.

IPFW racked up 80 kills in the match and 97 digs while Duquesne landed 58 kills and 84 digs in the 2 hour and 10 minute match. There were 30 ties and 11 lead changes in the five game series.

The Dukes (5-3) face cross-town rival Pitt on Tuesday, Sept. 5 in a 7:00 pm contest in Oakland.
