Joe Setting Named Women's Rowing Coach

Aug. 17, 2006

Director of Athletics Greg Amodio announced today the hiring of Joe Setting as women's rowing coach. Setting, who graduated from Duquesne in 2001, returns to the Bluff after spending the past five years coaching the rowing programs at Pittsburgh's Fox Chapel High School. He will begin his duties at Duquesne beginning Aug. 21.

"Joe brings an abundance of experience to the Duquesne rowing program both as a coach and former athlete," says Amodio. "He is familiar with our program having been a member of the Dukes' Club team. We look forward to him taking Duquesne rowing to the next level."

Setting spent the past five years with the Foxes serving as the boy's and girl's assistant coach beginning in the fall of 2001. Most recently, he headed the girl's varsity program the past three seasons. During his tenure, the Foxes captured numerous medals including gold at the 2005 Head of the Ohio Regatta in the Varsity 8, Varsity 4 and Lightweight 8 boats. Fox Chapel reigned as the 2005 and 2006 Midwest Scholastic Team Points and Women's Points Trophy Champions, giving the Foxes the distinction of being the first high school to take back-to-back trophies in the 13-year history of the 12-state Midwest Scholastic Championships.

Setting also guided his women's Lightweight 4 to 10th place and the women's Lightweight 8 to 12th at the 2006 US Rowing Youth National Championship. The Lightweight 8 finished eighth at the 2005 Youth Nationals.

"To be coaching the sport I love at my alma mater is truly the ultimate dream job for me," says Setting. "After many rewarding seasons coaching at the high school level, I am looking forward to this opportunity to coach at the collegiate level and continuing the success of the Duquesne rowing program."

Setting returns to his alma mater where he competed on the men's club rowing team from 1998 to 2001. He graduated Cum Laude in 2001 with a dual degree in management information systems and communication studies. Professionally, he was a network administrator with the Webb Law Firm in downtown Pittsburgh the past two years.

The 27-year old Newtown, PA native holds a Level 2 US Rowing coaching certificate. He resides in Fox Chapel with his wife, the former Sara Osier, who was a varsity oarsman for Duquesne.
