Swimmers Finish Second at Akron Invite

Duquesne's men's swimming team set seven school records and captured first place in 14 of 18 events in finishing second of eight schools at the Akron Invitational Dec. 1-3.

Senior Eric Bugby captured six gold medals and set five school records (four individual) for the Dukes while fellow senior Clayton Dean and sophomore Chris Kobela each captured a first place finish as well.

On day one, DU won four of five events with Kobela taking first in the 500 freestyle in a school record 4:35.27 while Dean took first and set a DU record in the 200 IM in 1:53.66. Sophomore Mike Ley won the 50 freestyle in 20.93 and teamed up with Bugby and seniors Ed Wicker and Scott Darwin to win the 200 free relay. Bugby's opening leg was good for a 50 free school record in 20.53.

Day two saw the Dukes capture six wins out of seven races. The Red and Blue won both the 200 medley relay and 800 free relay, setting a school record in the medley with a 1:33.22. Other winners included Bugby in the 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke, Kobela in the 200 free and freshman Ian P. Walsh in the 100 breaststroke.

On the third and final day, the Red and Blue won four more races including the 400 free relay, Darwin's 200 backstroke, Wicker's 100 free and Bugby's 200 butterfly.

The Dukes are off until Dec. 27 when they head to Ft. Lauderdale, FL for 11 days of holiday training at the CSCAA Swim Coaches Forum.
