Cincinnati, Ohio - In both teams last game of the regular season, the Xavier Musketeers stopped DU's volleyball team, 3-1, Saturday night at the Cintas Center. Duquesne senior Amanda Haeg and junior Dana McLaughlin recorded double-doubles on Xavier's senior day.
Haeg had a team-high 19 kills and added 13 digs. McLaughlin picked up a team-best 15 digs to go along with her 10 kills. Freshman Chelsea Tillotson set up 47 points.
After dropping the opening game to XU, 30-20, the Dukes closed the second contest with five straight points, beating the Muskies, 30-26.
Sophomore Laura Kastein's service ace tied game three at 11-11 and DU re-knotted it, 12-12, on junior Jenni Gross's kill via Tillotson's assist before Xavier grabbed a 15-12 edge. XU would not surrender this lead the rest of the way, winning 30-24. The Musketeers surged ahead from an 8-8 tie with eight-straight points on the way to a 30-24 win in the finale.
Xavier was led by Astyn Bjorklund's 21 kills. Jean Welsh had game-bests of 19 digs and 64 sets.
The Dukes close the season with an 11-21 record, 4-9 in Altantic 10 play, fifth in the six-team A-10 West Division. The Muskies (17-11, 10-3 A-10), as the fifth seed, are headed to the six-team conference championship to be held next weekend in Dayton, Ohio.
