Duquesne's women's swimming team improved to 9-6 on the season with a 115-88 victory over visiting Denison Saturday afternoon at Towers Pool.
The Dukes won eight of 11 events in the competition: 50, 100, 500 and 1,000 yard freestyle races, 100 yard backstroke and 200 yard individual medley races and the 200 yard freestyle and medley relay races. Sophomore Avy Mitchell won two of the golds, finishing first in the 100 yard breaststroke and as a member of the 200 yard medley relay team.
Also taking firsts were senior Amy Gersbach (1,000 yd. free.), junior Liz Yager (500 yd. free.), sophomore Katie McHugh (200 yd. IM) and freshman Katrina Streiner (100 yd. free.). Joining Mitchell on the 200 yard medley relay team were senior Sarah Breisinger and freshmen Mallory Marx and Christina Sherrard.
Breisinger, Gersbach and fellow seniors Liz Barba, Anne Manfroni, Erin McEvoy, Elena Pollock and Jillian Rupinski were honored on Senior Day prior to their final home competition.
Duquesne concludes the regular season schedule next Saturday, February 4, 2006 against crosstown rival Pittsburgh at the Panthers' Trees Pool. The meet is scheduled to start at 11:00 a.m.
