Philadelphia, Pa. - Duquesne University's men's swimming team was topped by La Salle, 131-106, Friday at the Explorers' Kirk Pool. The Dukes won five races including a clean sweep of the 100 yard backstroke competition.
Juniors Scott Darwin and Ed Wicker and sophomore Ian Walsh picked up individual wins. The Dukes also swept the relay competition as the 200 yard medley relay and the 200 yard freestyle relay teams each won. Darwin and Wicker were members of the gold-medal freestyle quartet.
Wicker (Newberry, SC / Newberry) won the 50 yard freestyle with a time of 21.61, just 4/10th of a second ahead of DU's Darwin, who finished second.
Darwin (Springfield, VA / West Springfield) finished first in the 100 yard backstroke with a time of 52.40. The Dukes also took second and third via junior Jason Reinhard's 53.77 and senior Doug Yeager's 55.28.
Walsh (Slatington, PA / Parkland) won the 100 yard freestyle with a time of 48.03, 0.76 ahead of La Salle's John Welsh.
Reinhard (Slatington, PA/Parkland) and freshman Michael Ley (Pittsburgh, PA / Fox Chapel) joined Wicker and Darwin on the winning freestyle relay team whose time of 1:27.63 topped DU's "B" team by over two seconds.
Reinhard and Ley were also on the winning medley relay team along with senior John Holleran (Allison Park, PA/North Allegheny) and junior Dan Wargo (Harrison City, PA / Penn-Trafford). Their time of 1:38.33 was nearly two seconds in front of La Salle's "B" squad.
The Dukes (5-6) head south to Towson, Md. for a 1:00 p.m. match with the Towson Tigers on Saturday, January 21, 2006.
