Final Stats
ST. LOUIS - Billikens' junior Dee Guempel assisted on three goals as Saint Louis (5-2-0, 1-0-0 A-10) topped Duquesne (3-1-1, 0-1-0 A-10), 5-0, to open both teams Atlantic 10 action in the second game of the Toys for Tots Tournament at Robert R. Hermann Stadium.
Junior Maureen Hughes and sophomore Cassi Winchell each added a pair of goals, while freshman Caroline Sweeney netted the final tally for the Billikens (5-2-0, 1-0-0 A-10). Freshman goalkeeper Abbey Goellner picked up her first career win and shutout with four saves.
The Billikens were offensive minded from the opening kickoff, forcing Duquesne keeper Virginia Bondi into a pair of saves in the opening five minutes. After a series of dangerous opportunities, junior Maureen Hughes put the Bills on the board in the 20th minute. Courtney Hulcer started the play on the right side of the field and found Winchell at the top of the box. The sophomore forward one-touched a pass between a pair of defenders to Hughes. With the keeper charging at her, Hughes found the angle and beat Bondi on the left side from 10 yards out.
Winchell wasted little time in making it a 2-0 lead when she took a pass from Guempel off the left wing and chipped Bondi from 14 yard. In the 29th minute, Guempel played a picture perfect through ball to Hughes racing toward the goal in the middle of the box, and Hughes again found the angle to beat Bondi.
In the second half, the Guempel-Winchell duo went right back to work. Just 1:09 into the half, Guempel sent a pass into the box on the left side. Winchell got on the ball as Bondi approached and dribbled around the Duquesne keeper for a 10-yard strike into the right side of the goal.
The Dukes' best opportunities came 10 minutes into the second period. Kelly Reed sent a curling shot to the near post, only to see Goellner leap to her right and make the save. In the 64th minute, Shannon Rengers also sent Goellner scrambling, but the freshman preserved the shutout.
Sweeney rounded out the Billikens' scoring with an opportunistic strike in the 72nd minute. After Guempel sent a shot over the crossbar, Bondi's kick caromed off a defender right to Sweeney who then tucked a shot inside the near post from six yards out.
Bondi had eight saves as Saint Louis outshot Duquesne 26-8
The Tournament resumes on Sun., Sept. 18, at 11 a.m. when the Dukes meet Army (5-2-0). The Billikens will face Air Force (3-3-1) at 1:30 p.m. in what will prove to be the title game as the Falcons topped the Black Knights 2-1 in the opening game Friday night.
