Richmond, Kentucky - Duquesne University's volleyball team dropped their 2005 season opener Friday night to Eastern Kentucky, 3-0 (30-19, 30-26, 31-29) at EKU's Comfort Suites Challenge at McBrayer Arena.
Senior Diana Wuebker (St. Henry, Ohio / St. Henry) had 16 kills to pace the Dukes. Sophomore Kristin Garnett (Frankfort, Ill. / Lincoln-Way East) set up 38 points and freshman Laura Kastein (Huntsville, Ohio / Benjamin Logan) tallied a team-best 18 digs.
The Colonels led the first two games from start to finish. The Dukes were determinged to change that in game three. Holding a 29-26 edge, Duquesne was unable to get that one winning point while EKU surged back with five straight to clinch the match.
Eastern Kentucky was led by Liz Guard's 22 kills while Brittany Nobilio had 25 digs and Kelly Jennings had 54 assists.
In the opening match of the tournament, Morehead State grabbed a come-from-behind 3-2 victory over Georgia State (29-31, 30-25, 28-30, 30-27, 15-12). This was GSU's first competition as member of the Colonial Athletic Association; the Panthers previously were in the Atlantic Sun Conference.
Saturday, August 27, the Dukes (0-1) take on Morehead State (1-0) at 12:00 noon and Eastern Kentucky (1-0) faces Georgia State (0-1) at 3:00 p.m. in the final day of the tournament.
