Duquesne Wins East Regional Championship

The Duquesne University wrestling team captured four individual titles en route to winning the 2005 NCAA Division I Wrestling East Region Championship. The Dukes scored 77.0 team points in topping Slippery Rock (69.5) and four-time defending champion Millersville (66.5) as well as Gardner-Webb (54.5) and Delaware State (36.0). Duquesne individual champions included 125-pound freshman Jonathan Bittinger, 174-pound junior Mark Himes, 197-pound sophomore Jared Ricotta and senior heavyweight Marc Allemang. In addition, Duquesne coach John Hartupee was named Coach of the Year.

Duquesne highlights included Himes defeating three-time champion Doug Yeager, 7-4 at 174 pounds and Allemang improving his record to 41-6 and extending his winning streak to 23.

DU's four individual champions will return to the mat on Thursday, March 17 as they participate in the NCAA Championships in St. Louis, MO. It will be Allemang's third straight trip to Nationals while Bittinger, Himes and Ricotta will make their first appearance.
