Dayton, Ohio - Duquesne University's women's soccer team, in its first-ever Atlantic 10 Championship Tournament game, was topped by Charlotte, 2-1, Thursday in overtime at Dayton's Baujan Field. Senior Erica Carey (Wilmington, N.C. / J.T. Hoggard) scored the game's first goal midway through the first half giving DU a 1-0 edge at the break.
Duquesne took the lead at 25:45 of the opening period on Carey's penalty kick, her seventh goal this season and 20th during her career on the Bluff.
Charlotte tied the game in the third minute of the second half when Nicole Labuda found Kelsie Ormsby, whose 15-footer got past DU junior goalkeeper Virginia Bondi (Strongsville, Ohio / Strongsville).
The game was still knotted at 1-1 at the end of regulation as the teams prepared for overtime. The Niners quickly scored when Labuda hit an eight-yard shot off an assist from Lindsey Beam, 48 seconds into the extra period.
Duquesne outshot the 49ers 15-6, forcing UNCC's goalie Juli Black to capture five saves.
The Dukes, the sixth seed at this event, complete the season with a 10-6-1 record. These 10 victories are the most wins for the Red and Blue in this sport's 11-year history.
"Absoluetly an amazing season," said Coach Walker. "I'm so proud of the girls. We had a lot first this season. Our first trip to the conference tournament and our first year with a winning A-10 record. We accomplished a lot this season."
Number 3 Charlotte is 11-8-0 and moves on to Friday's semifinals against #2 Rhode Island. Saint Louis (#1) will play the winner of Thursday's second game between #4 Dayton and #5 Saint Joseph's.
